Holidays only a short distance from home? //ENG We wanted to try out a popular campsite that is right around the corner from our house. We were doubting if it would really feel like a holiday, especially because we often cycle here. On Friday we had great weather, arrived at a beautiful pitch and enjoyed a delicious dinner in the campsite restaurant. On Saturday, however, we woke up to a lot of rain. To be honest, it was very tempting to just drive home and have breakfast with a lot more space. But all in all, we had a great weekend: the campsite right next to the beach is great, and having our little house right next to the dunes was fantastic. //NL Wij wilden graag een populaire camping uitproberen die om de hoek van ons huis ligt. We twijfelden of het wel echt als vakantie zou voelen, vooral omdat we hier vaak naartoe fietsen. Vrijdag hadden we prachtig weer, kwamen op een mooie plek aan en genoten van een heerlijk diner in het campingrestaurant om het weekend te beginnen. Zaterdag werden we echter wakker met veel regen. Eerlijk gezegd was het erg verleidelijk om gewoon naar huis te rijden en te ontbijten met veel meer ruimte. Maar al met al hebben wij een geweldig weekend gehad: de camping direct aan het strand is geweldig en ons huisje direct aan de duinen te hebben staan was fantastisch. //DE Wir wollten einen beliebten Campingplatz gleich um die Ecke von unserem Haus ausprobieren. Wir waren skeptisch, ob es sich wirklich wie Urlaub anfühlt, zumal wir oft mit dem Rad hierher fahren. Am Freitag hatten wir tolles Wetter, kamen auf einem schönen Stellplatz an und genossen ein leckeres Abendessen im Restaurant des Campingplatzes. Am Samstag wachten wir jedoch bei starkem Regen auf. Ehrlich gesagt war die Versuchung groß, einfach nach Hause zu fahren und mit viel mehr Platz zu frühstücken. Aber alles in allem hatten wir ein tolles Wochenende: Der Campingplatz direkt am Strand ist toll und unser kleines Haus direkt an den Dünen war fantastisch.

throwback to our first test night.. The conditions for our first test night were not ideal. Construction took longer than planned, so at that point, no interior was built, and the windows weren't completely finished either. Additionally, we hadn't obtained official approval as a caravan, which seemed okay, as they apparently can also just be considered a load on a trailer, as long as they're demountable. Nonetheless, we found the journey quite exciting! Fortunately, we arrived safely at our destination. The weather was great, and after a night on our air mattress, we woke up to this spectacular view! // NL De omstandigheden voor onze eerste testnacht waren niet ideaal. De bouw duurde langer dan gepland, dus op dat moment was er nog helemaal geen interieur, en ook de ramen waren nog niet helemaal klaar. Bovendien hadden we nog geen officiële goedkeuring als caravan, wat schijnbaar geen probleem was, aangezien ze ook simpelweg kunnen worden gezien als een lading op een aanhanger, mits ze demonteerbaar zijn. Toch vonden we de reis spannend! Gelukkig kwamen we veilig aan op onze bestemming, het weer was geweldig, en na een nacht op ons luchtbed werden we wakker met dit spectaculaire uitzicht! // DE Die Bedingungen für unsere erste Test-Nacht waren nicht ideal. Der Bau dauerte länger als geplant, zu diesem Zeitpunkt war noch nichts ausgebaut und auch die Fenster waren eigentlich nicht komplett fertiggestellt. Außerdem hatten wir noch keine offizielle Wohnwagen-Zulassung, was ok war, da Tiny Häusern wohl im Prinzip auch nur eine Ladung auf einem Anhänger sein können, solange sie demontierbar sind. Trotzdem fanden wir die Fahrt so schon sehr aufregend! Glücklicherweise kamen wir sicher an unserem Zielort an, hatten super Wetter und erwachten nach einer Nacht auf unserer Luftmatratze mit diesem spektakulären Ausblick!

a new cover... Another aspect being improved in the new version of the mobile summer house is the facade. Nope sorry, we're not changing the material here. I know many people are skeptical about the polycarbonate, but it offers many advantages for the mobile summer house, which I'll explain later. The format is changing! We're now using 32mm thick panels instead of 40mm. Thermally, acoustically, etc., this doesn't make a noticeable difference for our project. However, in this thickness the panels come in larger dimensions, which allow them to be better adapted to our facade grid. In the self-built version, you often see seams in places where it's not visually pleasing, and that won't be the case in the new version. //NL Een ander aspect die wordt verbeterd in de nieuwe versie van het mobile summer house is de gevel. En nee sorry, we veranderen niet het materiaal hier. Ik weet dat veel mensen sceptisch zijn over het polycarbonaat, maar het biedt veel voordelen, waar ik later op terug zal komen. Het formaat verandert! We gebruiken nu in plaats van 40 mm, panelen met een dikte van 32 mm. Thermisch, akoestisch, etc., maakt dit geen merkbaar verschil voor ons project. Maar deze panelen zijn in grotere afmetingen beschikbaar, zodat wij deze beter kunnen aanpassen aan ons gevelrooster. In de zelfgebouwde versie zie je vaak naden op plaatsen waar het niet visueel aantrekkelijk is, en dat zal niet het geval zijn. // DE Ein weiterer Punkt, der in der neuen Version verbessert wird, ist die Fassade. Und nee sorry, wir ändern nicht das Material. Ich weiß, dass viele Menschen skeptisch gegenüber Polycarbonat sind, aber es bietet viele Vorteile, auf die ich später noch eingehen werde. Das Format ändert sich! Wir verwenden nun statt 40mm Platten eine Stärke von 32mm. Thermisch, akustisch etc. macht das keinen merklichen Unterschied für unser Projekt. Aber in dieser Stärke gibt es die Platten mit größeren Abmessungen, sodass sie besser an unser Fassadenraster angepasst werden können. In der selbstgebauten Version sieht man immer wieder Fugen an Stellen, an denen es optisch nicht so schön ist, und das wird in der neuen Version nicht mehr der Fall sein.

In de DIY-versie waren de wandelementen alleen verbonden met het aanhangwagenframe. Tijdens mijn research vond ik verschillende tiny houses waarbij deze verbinding werd gebruikt. Maar het is echter veel logischer om de dragende elementen van het huis te verbinden met de sterkste punten van de aanhanger. // DE Es gibt mehrere Punkte, die verbessert wurden. Ein wichtiger Aspekt ist, dass der Anhänger maßgefertigt wurde für die neue Version 2.0. Die vertikalen Balken der Wände sind nun direkt mit den Quertraversen des Anhängers verbunden, wodurch Lasten besser abgeleitet werden können. In der DIY-Version waren die Wandelemente lediglich mit dem Anhängerrahmen verbunden. Während meiner Recherche habe ich festgestellt, dass bei mehreren Tiny-Häusern diese Verbindungsmethode angewendet wurde. Es macht jedoch deutlich mehr Sinn, die tragenden Elemente des Hauses mit den stärksten Punkten des Anhängers zu verbinden.

How time flies... It's hard to believe that those photos are already almost two years old. It was taken in May 2022, so not quite, but by the time the professional version is really ready for renting, it will probably already be May. In comparison to the self-built version, I'm sometimes surprised how long it takes to realize the professional version. But hey, this version is definitely greatly improved. The design remains more or less the same, but everything is reworked, better elaborated, and statically calculated. The fact that version 2.0 of the mobile summer house is now being built by professionals will certainly make a huge difference. I'm already so excited to see the end result! //NL Het is moeilijk te geloven dat deze foto's al bijna twee jaar oud zijn. Ze zijn van mei 2022, dus nog niet precies twee jaar, maar tegen de tijd dat de professionele versie echt klaar is voor verhuur, zal het waarschijnlijk al mei zijn. In vergelijking met de zelfgebouwde versie ben ik soms verbaasd over hoe lang het duurt om de professionele versie te realiseren. Maar hé, deze versie is zeker enorm verbeterd. Het ontwerp blijft min of meer hetzelfde, maar alles is beter uitgewerkt en vooral statisch berekend. Ook het feit dat versie 2.0 van het mobile summer house nu wordt gebouwd door professionals, zal zeker een groot verschil maken. Ik ben al zo benieuwd naar het eindresultaat! //DE Kaum zu glauben, dass diese Fotos schon fast zwei Jahre alt sind. Es wurde im Mai 2022 aufgenommen, also noch nicht ganz zwei Jahre her, aber bis die professionelle Version wirklich fertig für die Vermietung ist, wird es wahrscheinlich schon Mai sein. Im Vergleich zur selbstgebauten Version bin ich manchmal überrascht, wie lange es dauert, die Profi-Version zu realisieren. Aber hey, auf jeden Fall ist diese Version extrem verbessert. Das Design bleibt zwar mehr oder weniger dasselbe, aber alles ist nochmal überarbeitet, besser ausgearbeitet und vor allem statisch berechnet. Auch die Tatsache, dass die Version 2.0 des mobile summer houses nun von Profis gebaut wird, wird natürlich einen enormen Unterschied machen. Ich bin schon total gespannt auf das Endergebnis!

happy new year... the beginning of the year is always a great moment to look back on the last year. The most special moment for us was the birth of our daughter at the beginning of the year. We are grateful for the precious moments with our family and friends, that we were able to travel quite a bit - especially now with the 4 of us - and the progress we have made over the year. ... superhero - tiny house maybe you remember, a few months ago, my son and I had a lot of fun designing a superhero tiny house. I mean, how great would it be to just be able to fly anywhere you want with your own little vacation home. Call that a sustainable alternative to flying as it can fly with its own wings, haha... Considering that we built everything in more or less 3 months, this version also works really well and we have already put a lot of kilometers behind us with it. finally dutch... it finally worked to import the trailer. The first step to the professional version is now completed, and the foundation for the house is ready. In the end, the whole process of importing the trailer took just as long as it was building the trailer, but it's now done. The problem was that the official papers from Germany simply weren't signed, crazy mistake you wouldn't expect. Unfortunately, we only noticed this at the appointment with the RDW (the Netherlands Vehicle Authority), and of course, they sent us home. When we received the papers with a signature, we made another appointment. But then suddenly there weren't the right papers. I have no idea why it wasn't communicated at our first appointment, but now we were told that it would be best to have the trailer registered in Germany first, to someone from my family, and that it would then be much easier with these documents. It took a long time until we got an appointment in Germany. But in the end, it was really easy to import the trailer with these documents. the mobile summer house... we call it a tiny house / caravan hybrid, because it functions as a caravan and it's design is based on the concept of tiny houses. It is a sustainable concept, since it is made out of wood and recyclable polycarbonate panels. The first prototype is self-build. We already tested it on several vacations and drove more than 5000km with it. We really love the concept and want others to explore it. driving in the mountains... the route to this wonderful campsite was definitely a challenge and a good test for the mobile summer house. In order to have this fantastic view, we of course, first had to drive really high. The road was quite curvy and rather narrow in some places. the blooming heath fields.. this year I finally managed to see the heath fields blooming. It was really very beautiful, although unfortunately we didn't manage to really walk through the fields with our 4-year-old. The walk from the parking lot to the beginning of the fields was enough for him. what a lovely vacation... shortly before our vacation we were in doubt whether we should really go because the weather forecast was so bad. lovely sunset... on the way home we spent one night on a farm. For our son was is amazing, the owners were very kind people and the view was beautiful. We really enjoyed it here. reflecting the environment.. personally I really like how the facade reflects the environment. It's definitely a matter of taste whether you like the plastic or not, I personally really like the combination of the white facade elements with the warm wood and then the reflective transparent panels used for the windows and doors. standing in the middle of the mountains.. we are really enjoying being on a campsite in the mountains. All surrounding cities are about half an hour away. It's super quiet here, there are several hiking trails from here or people are out and about with their bikes. the famous neuschwanstein castle... it was nice to see the castle in real life once. We parked in the parking lot signposted to the castle and walken up the hill to the castle. That went very well with a 4 year old and baby in the carrier. The path is paved, so it would probably work quite well even with a stroller. There was also a hut along the way where you can eat or buy snacks/drinks and of course a lot of souvenirs. There are masses of tourists walking up the same path, but when we were there it was still an ok amount. We didn't have tickets to enter the castle, they were sold out months in advance. So we continued walking to the 'Marienbrücke' to take this photo here. The bridge was built in 1845 and has of course been restored over the years. But here it was extremely crowded and it felt a bit strange to be standing on such an old bridge with so many people. Here we just took a quick photo and then made our way back because we definitely found it too crowded. To do it once was nice. Personally, I wouldn't go here again. What a beautiful lake.. at the Forggensee in the south of Germany it was really beautiful and this colors are just so impressive. The weather forecast was terrible before we left and we even considered canceling the holiday. In the end it rained from time to time, but we also had many hours of sunshine, and when the sun was shining, it was really nice and warm! The two men of the family also went swimming a couple of times. How do you choose your camping location? We still don't have that much experience camping with a 'caravan' and are just trying out different options at the moment. The campsites we stayed at in Spain were quite luxurious. Here it almost felt more like camping in a resort, there was everything one can wish for: a supermarket, bakery, pool, slides, entertainment etc. We really liked it there, but having the sea right in front of our door and in general the Costa Brava plays a big role in that. Recently we went to a nature campsite for a weekend and loved it. It was really nice to have just the minimum you need and above all to enjoy nature and the greenery around you. Also the other people who were camping there were lovely and the atmosphere in general. It was definitely a big favorite for us. We tried out the @roadsurfer app on the way to our final holiday destination. Here one can find camp spots that are no typical campsites. We decided to stay one night at a winery and felt very comfortable there. In any case, we notice that we like camping much better outside of the typical campsite. We're not big fans of standing in a line next to the next camper. We are doing this sort of camping at the Forggensee. Although it's location is fantastic, directly next to the lake and the campsite itself is also clean, friendly people etc. However, we realize that we value our privacy and prefer the unconventional camping locations until now. The kitchen is slowly getting ready... before the holiday we managed to get the kitchen doors ready. That makes a much better visual impression when you go into the summer house, because entering the caravan you immediately walk towards the kitchenette. Waking up early... At least there was an advantage to being woken up at 6.30am. We rode with his bike through the vineyards to wake up nobody else. That was beautiful and otherwise we would not have made it before we continued our journey. On the way back we stopped by the bakery and chose delicious pastry, which is not available at home. We had a great stay at a winery. We loved not staying at a typical campsite, but choosing an alternative that was a little out of the ordinary. We could choose a spot on a beautiful, spacious lawn. We really had a lot of privacy here, which was also due to the fact that we were here during the week. We loved being able to open our large window from the bed and have a view of the vineyards. second (long) trip... this weekend we are going on our second longer trip with the mobile summer house. This time the four of us, including the baby. We have already made a test trip for a weekend, which worked out great. Unfortunately, the big one doesn't want to sleep in his bed upstairs, which was actually made especially for him. But he's never been the easiest with the sleeping. So he just slept with his mattress next to our bed. Let's see if it will work out at some point on vacation that he also sleeps in his bed. Working on the street... on the one hand I still have to get used to that, on the other hand it's super interesting to see the reactions from the people who walk by. Most people wonder what exactly I'm working on and give super nice compliments. Today a woman came by and said that she thinks the mobile summer house is so great that it gives her goosebumps. That's a wonderful motivation to keep going! Right now I'm still busy fitting all windows with window handles and sealing some of them better. How is it like to drive the mobile summer house? That's also a question I've often been asked. Our trip to Spain went really well. The caravan was super stable on the road and we sometimes even forgot that it was attached to our car. Because the little house was built on a new trailer, which has 2 axles and brakes, we had a good base and it was safer on the road than some older caravans. However, we only drove the whole way at around 100 km/h. How to make camping more eco-friendly? When designing and building the mobile summer house, I often dealt with the topic of how to build it as sustainable as possible, using as many renewable or at least recyclable materials as possible. But also while using the mobile summer house, the camping trip should be eco-friendly. One decision we have therefore made is to use a composting toilet from @meinetrenntoilette so we don't need any chemical products. We are definitely super happy with this decision! What's next? What is it? Is it a DIY caravan or a tiny house or what? Yes... good question! To be honest I haven't found a great way to name it yet either. A hybrid of a tiny house and caravan is probably the best answer. The Dutch Vehicle Authority has officially registered it as a caravan, but this is also possible with a tiny house, which may never be used as a caravan. The design is based on the tiny house concept, but I wont dare to call it just a tiny house because there is a completely different idea behind this concept.  We have no plans to sell our house and downsize our living space, this one is made for vacations only.  It is built with a very light facade, making it fairly easy to transport, like a caravan.  But in form and material it takes up the idea of ​​a tiny house again.  It's made of wood, which makes it more sustainable since we just used wood certified with the FSC label. Even though the facade is made of polycarbonate, it's said to be 100% recyclable. How do you spend your (camping-)vacation? At the camping fair in Utrecht yesterday @kampeerencaravanjaarbeurs, I saw some really nice caravans and campervans. Personally, I'm not the biggest fan of the typical caravan or motorhome. Of course there are exceptions and you certainly have great comfort, but for me the design is often old-fashioned and there doesn't seem to be much development to move towards sustainability or innovation.  I find the, as @caravanity_nl calls it, re-design of old caravans visually much more appealing and more durable. However, where I heard the term sustainability and innovation the most was with campervans.  I personally think the concept of @amstervan_official is very pretty and contemporary in design, with a big plus that natural materials were used as much as possible.  The campervan from @ventje_camper is also beautiful furnished and even won an award for sustainability.  So there is definitely development taking place in this area in the camping world. No wonder this type of camping is popular with younger generations. For us personally, with a 3 year old and a second child on the way, it is not an option due to the space.
